Countertops

The countertop is one of the 3 major surfaces in a kitchen and makes a big impact on the overall look and feel of your kitchen. A kitchen update or restyling should include the replacement of older countertops, sink and faucet. We will assist you in your selection of material, color and plumbing fixtures to compliment your restyled kitchen or bath.

There are 4 primary categories of countertop material – Laminates, Solid Surface, Quartz and Natural Stone. Some people may want ceramic tile or concrete, however we do not provide these surfaces. Each material has its pros and cons. Everyone has their preferences based on look, durability, ease of upkeep or price.

Laminates

image here One of the oldest countertop surfaces, laminates are basically decorative paper or photo-finishes combined with paper and resins which are fused together under high heat and pressure. This durable laminate is bonded to sheets of substrate material, typically particle board, MDF or plywood which provides the structure for the countertop or vanity. Laminate tops are durable, easy to clean, the least expensive and offer vast decorating choices.

Originally laminates were made of solid colors, then patterns and photo-finishes were added. Today there are hundreds of finishes to choose from, including premium ones that look and feel like natural stone. Initially there was only one edge or profile – the straight edge. Modern technology has expanded the number and styles of edge profiles available.

There are two laminate terms that you should understand. Site-built tops are built and installed at your home. The substrate material is cut to fit the space and walls of your kitchen and then the laminate is bonded to it with special adhesives. This method is typically used for unusual shaped tops or when walls are not square (which could result in large gaps with the backsplash). Site-built tops will have a seam where the backsplash meets the countertop and on the side splashes. They may have additional seams in the top depending on the size and shape. The edge may be a straight edge, beveled, wood or made with a complimentary color of laminate.

Post-form countertops are manufactured and usually include a continuous backsplash with no seam. We cut the tops to fit your space and install them on your cabinets. These tops offer some unique edge treatments that when combined with the new premium finish laminates result in countertops that resemble natural or man-made stone tops. This type of top has mitered seams in the corners and side splashes. Typically the back splash is only available in one height. These tops come in a range of widths and lengths to fit most applications.

Solid Surface

image here Consistent color and patterns are a standard of solid surface products. Solid surface tops are made of acrylic or polyester resins. This makes them nonporous, stain resistant and easy to clean. They are available in a variety of colors and patterns to add a special look to any kitchen. Although most tops are seamed on-site, the resulting seams are virtually undetectable. Some solid surfaces may scratch over time, but are easily polished back to new condition. Sinks may be drop-in, under mount or integrated into the top. Corian and other solid surfaces initially offered a lower cost alternative to natural stone. With an increasing supply of natural stone causing the price to drop significantly, many people choose solid surface for their design based on color consistency and pattern.

image here Quartz surfaces are man-made using natural quartz crystal, one of the hardest minerals on earth. These surfaces are extremely hard and scratch resistant. Like solid surface tops, quartz tops have a consistent color and pattern. They are more heat tolerant than other surfaces and do not require sealing or any special care. They are the most stain resistant and bacteria resistant surface in use. All of this comes with a price – typically exceeding all but the most unique natural stones.

Natural Stone - Granite

image here Considered by most to be the ultimate in countertop material. Granite is a naturally occurring stone that is extremely hard, having been formed over thousands of years deep in the earth’s core under intense heat and pressure. Granite will not be harmed by placing hot pots on the countertop. Granites have differing porosities and strengths. Some stone has more naturally occurring fissures and veining. Designers love granite for its unique characteristics and ‘movement’ caused by nature. Many people recommend that granite be sealed at least once a year, although there are some that say it depends on the specific stone. Sealing usually involves wiping on a readily available liquid sealer. Granite can be fabricated by using hand tools or automated CNC cutting and profiling machines. There are several dozen stones that can be used for your kitchen that are in the $40 to $60 per square foot range. Some of the most dramatic and beautiful stones run well past $250 per square foot.
